LONDON: Everton beat Middlesbrough 2-0 on Sunday to move up to fifth place in the English Premier League. Defender Joleon Lescott and midfielder Steven Pienaar scored at Goodison to take Everton to 13 points, six fewer than leader Arsenal, which had won 1-0 at West Ham on Saturday. Everton moved up six places while Middlesbrough dropped a place to 14th in the standings with eight points. Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, who all played on Saturday, are the other teams still above Everton. Manchester United again failed to replicate its free scoring form of last season but Cristiano Ronaldo’s 51st-minute goal at Birmingham kept it in second place in the league. Ronaldo won the match for United when he collected a long pass by Nemanja Vidic and rounded goalkeeper Maik Taylor before knocking the ball into the net. United has hit just seven goals in eight games, but its defence is tied with Liverpool’s as the meanest in the league having allowed just two goals. The results: Sunday: Everton 2 (Lescott 7, Pienaar 58) bt Middlesbrough 0. Saturday: Birmingham 0 lost to Manchester United (Ronaldo 51). — Agencies
