NEW DELHI: Tushar Liberhan recovered in the nick of time to outwit Vijayant Malik 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s first round of the DSCL National tennis championship that kicked off in a festive atmosphere at the DLTA Complex here on Sunday. In a battle between the two talented lads from Chandigarh, the sixth-seeded Tushar was able to turn the match around by breaking Vijayant in the tenth game of the second set. Vijayant did take a 3-1 lead in the decider, but Tushar was able to push his game up and race away to a comfortable finish. Lively encounterIn another lively encounter, the eighth-seeded Navdeep Singh was able to stop the talented wild card entrant Rupesh Roy with a quality fare. A couple of doublefaults from Rupesh saw him being broken decisively in the 11th game of the first set after a keen tussle and Navdeep cracked a few rousing winners on either flank to break the resistance of his opponent. Ashutosh Singh, Vivek Shokeen, Vinod Sridhar and Arjun Goutham were the other men to make the second round. Rushmi ralliesIn the women’s section, the second-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi recovered from being down 2-5 to beat Shalini Sahoo. In another match, Rashmi Teltumbe, coming in place of Poojashree Venkatesh, who pulled out with a shoulder problem, capitalised on the chance to beat Ragini Vimal in straight sets.
