KAKINADA: Karnataka retained the men’s title defeating Kerala 3-1 in the final, while Kerala women defeated Andhra Pradesh 2-1 on the concluding day of the South Zone inter-State badminton championship on Sunday. Karnataka’s Mohit put his team on the winning path defeating a jaded Sanave Thomas in the first singles 21-13, 11-21, 21-19. Sanave’s weak retrievals during the crucial rallies proved costly. Ajit Wijitilak swelled the lead outclassing Kerala’s Arun 21-16, 21-13 without much difficulty. Doubles specialist Jaseel Ismail and Sanave made a strong comeback outsmarting Guru and Arun 21-13, 21-14. However, S.D.S. Krishna, with his powerful crosscourt shots picked up points at vital stages to win the third singles. The results: Men’s final: Karnataka bt Kerala 3-1 (Mohit Kamath bt Sanave Thomas 21-13, 11-21, 21-19; Ajit Wijitilak bt V.
