NEW DELHI: To mark World Heart Day, a special “Simplicity Walk” was organised by Heart Care Foundation of India and Philips Electronics India here on Sunday.

Flagged off

Starting from Ansal Plaza, the walk was flagged off jointly by Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri and three leading actresses of the film “Chak De India” -- Vidya Malvade, Chitrashi Rawat and Shilpa Shukla -- who led the walk throughout the distance of 5 km. In a joint statement the Chakde girls said that no team could be “Team India” unless they were physically and mentally fit. A large number of Delhiites and renowned doctors took part in the walk.

Addressing the gathering, Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal said: “A little more of exercise needs to be added in everybody’s life. It is not necessary to walk at a stretch as one can have multiple bouts of exercise spells. Walking, jogging, aerobics, cycling, skipping are all good for the heart.”

“Those who want complete cardiovascular fitness should undergo two days of jogging for 20 minutes a week, two days of brisk walking for 30 minutes a week and two days of weight resistive exercises two days a week,” he added.

In her message, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who herself underwent a bypass surgery in the recent past emphasised the importance of brisk walking in day-to-day life.

Exercise

Well-known heart specialist Naresh Trehan, who was present on the occasion, said age was no bar to exercise and results have shown that even elderly people who continue to walk prolong their life.
