“Three agencies fail to achieve tree plantation targets”

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

Some have overachieved

NEW DELHI: Yet to make the dream of green Delhi their own, of the 18 greening agencies in the Capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council, the Airports Authority of India and the Indraprastha Generation Company Limited have been identified as the worst offenders having failed to achieve their tree plantation targets for 2006-07.

According to the Greening Delhi Action Plan 2007-08 published by the Delhi Government’s Department of Forests and Wildlife, the NDMC was given a target of planting 20,000 trees last year but managed only 11,000, the Airports Authority of the India was also given the same target but drew a complete blank having not planted any trees. The Indraprastha Generation Company Limited was given a target of the 15,000 trees but managed only 4,000. The others who have made it to the negative list include the Delhi Development Authority and the Public Works Department.

NDMC Director (Horticulture) Subhash Chandra said: “While we have been trying our best to achieve the target provided to us, we have high density of green cover in our area which leaves us with very little free area for plantation. We plant in place of dead, dry and damaged trees and are also actively planting in the Central Ridge. This year we hope to achieve the target set for us and have already made good progress on this front.”

Having under-achieved the number of tree to be planted annually the NDMC and the Indraprastha Generation Company Limited have been give the same target as the previous year, the underperforming Airports Authority of India has been given a reduced target of planting 5,000 trees for the year 2007-08. While there are agencies in the city which are under-performing, there are also others that have actually overachieved. This includes MCD, CPWD, the Delhi Jal Board, the Delhi Cantonment Board, the Education Department and the Delhi Transport Corporation, which have planted more trees than their given target.
