Thiruvananthapuram: A 46-year-old commuter was run over by the 6348 Mangalore-Thiruvananthapuram Express while trying to nab a pickpocket who allegedly snatched his purse and tried to jump from the train at the Varkala railway station early on Sunday. The police said the deceased was identified as Dasan Joseph, a resident of Palliparambu Veedu, Pavukkara, Chengannur. Joseph, an auto driver who boarded a general compartment from Chengannur, was coming to the capital along with his daughter, Soumya, for an interview. The incident took place around 4.20 a.m. when the train was approaching Varkala. The pickpocket who allegedly snatched the purse from Joseph tried to escape by jumping from the train as it approached the station. Joseph who tried to nab the pickpocket fell on the railway track and was run over by the train. One arrestedSunil, 23, a resident of Venganoor in the capital, was nabbed from the railway station premises and handed over to the police in connection with the incident. The body of Joseph was shifted to the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, and handed over to the relatives after post-mortem examination later in the day. The Varkala police registered a case under Section 174 of the Cr.PC. According to the police, the pickpocket is in no way responsible for the death of Joseph. The case has been transferred from the Varkala police to the Government Railway Police.
