Corporation looking for body to execute project

To rehabilitate Perandoor canal evictees

Rs.26-crore aid under JNNURM for housing project

Evictees put up at a Corporation-owned building now

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is in search of agencies that can implement a housing project for those evicted from the banks of the Perandoor canal.

The civic body has obtained support from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for the rehabilitation of the evictees. Under the JNNURM, a Rs.26-crore project has been sanctioned for the rehabilitation housing project for 42 families that were evicted, said Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams.

A meeting of all those concerned will be held at the Kochi Corporation office on Monday to take a decision regarding an implementing agency, she said.

There is a dearth of agencies capable of implementing the projects. The civic body needs agencies capable of taking up and completing such projects in time, Ms. Williams said.

It was nearly four months ago that the 42 families were evicted from the banks of the Perandoor canal as part of the drive of the civic body to prevent encroachments along the banks of the canal. The Corporation had lodged these families at a building owned by the Kochi Corporation at Ernakulam North.

The Corporation plans to construct housing units at different plots as the civic administrators are not inclined to create a new slum in the city.

The evictees will be located at different parts of the city. The Corporation plans to bring the evictees to the main stream of society by providing them all required facilities, Ms. Williams said.

The Corporation had earlier identified plots at Mundamveli, Atlantis and some other parts of the city for the housing project. The Revenue authorities were also asked to identify small plots for the project, she said.

Besides constructing houses, the civic body will also ensure all infrastructure including Anganwadis, community halls, drinking water facilities and power connections for the occupants. There are also plans to provide them livelihood options in association with Kudumbasree units, Ms. Williams said.

Once the implementing agencies are identified, the civic authorities hope to complete the construction and rehabilitation project in six months.
