90 p.c. heart attacks preventable, says expert

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: K.M. Cherian, eminent cardio-thoracic surgeon from Chennai, said 90 per cent of heart attacks were preventable except those caused by genetic factor.

Addressing a function after receiving the Outstanding Person of the Year Award from Kurnool Heart Foundation in connection with the World Heart Day on Sunday night, Dr. Cherian said the heart attacks caused by diabetes, hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, lack of exercise and stress were preventable.

However, the chances of getting heart attack were 60 per cent if one of the parents had history of heart problem and 90 per cent if both parents had history. He called upon public to take care of the heart from the beginning as a mechanical heart cost Rs. 60 lakhs in the market.

Dr. Cherian said heart transplant was easy but finding a donor was more difficult in India.
