SALEM: The Salem Corporation has decided to bring in the cell phone towers and other wireless towers erected by the telecommunication companies under the property tax net. The initiative was taken up as a part of the efforts to augment the revenue of civic body. The telecom towers were not included in the tax net previously, though the State Government issued orders in this regard several months ago. Officials said that the civic body would initiate a survey to identify all the towers installed in the four zones and start collecting property tax (under commercial category) from the telecommunication companies. Property tax is an important source of revenue to the Corporation. But the civic body could not achieve 100 per cent tax collection due to various reasons. The property tax arrears were running into several crores of rupees. At the council meeting held recently, councillors alleged that there were many irregularities in the taxation system. They wanted the Corporation to streamline the taxation system to improve the civic body’s financial condition. The civic administration had also decided to bring in the residential buildings, in which hoardings are installed, under the commercial category of property tax. Commercial establishments had erected hoardings on a number of residential buildings. Property tax for these buildings was calculated under the residential category.
