SALEM: The State Government should establish a Food Park in Salem to promote food processing industries. In a press release, Vignana Vivasayigal Sangam president G.N. Periyasamy said that the park would facilitate processing and preservation of tomatoes, tapioca, fruits and vegetables, which were produced in large quantities in the district. Guidance centreConcerted efforts should be taken up to encourage entrepreneurs to set up food processing units. The association also demanded that the Government should establish an Agricultural Guidance and Industrial Centre in Salem. Farmers should be given proper guidance to adopt modern cultivation technologies and improve the agricultural productivity. Steps should be taken to educate farmers on seed selection, organic farming, obtaining market information, crop insurance, manufacturing of value-added products and agri-business through the centre. Efforts should also be made to motivate the farmers to start agriculture-based industries. The Government should initiate measures to ensure remunerative prices for the produces of farmers, the release said. Promoting exportThe association also wanted the Union Government to establish an Agri Export Zone to promote the export of agricultural products from Salem region. A council should also be set up under the chairmanship of District Collector for promoting agriculture.
