PUDUCHERRY: The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Government to mark the Sankarabarani river flowing in Sellipet village as ‘prohibited area’ to prevent illegal sand mining on the riverbed. State president of the party M. Visveswaran said in a statement on Saturday that sand was being illegally mined up to a depth of 15-20 feet and this could affect the water resources in the area. It would also damage the newly constructed bridge since sand from around the supporting pillars was being removed, he cautioned. If the Government did not act immediately, the party, with the support of locals, would stage protests, he said. — Staff Reporter.
