News Analysis
* The heading of a report was “[National Rural Employment Guarantee Act] NREGA: Minister stresses social audit” (October 1, 2007). It was an error. It was not a minister, but the general secretary of the CPI-backed National Federation of Indian Women and Central Employment Guarantee Council member Annie Raja who had made the observation.
* In a report “ISRO prize for students” (September 29, 2007), the expansion of NALSAR was not given. It is the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law, Hyderabad, an institution of national eminence in the field of legal education and research. It is a residential university established in 1998 under the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University Act, 1998 (Andhra Pradesh Act 34 of 1998). * The blurb of an interview with Jan Pronk, senior Dutch politician and statesman and a professor at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, “Darfur crisis: a view from the inside” (Op-Ed, September 27, 2007), said that “he is now in the running for the leadership of the Dutch Labour party — PvdA (Partij van de Arbeid)”. The interviewer Mr. A. Rangarajan clarifies that between his finalising and despatching the article and its publication, Jan Pronk, quite unexpectedly, lost the multi-round elections to the PvdA chairmanship. Technically speaking at the time of publication, he was not in the running any longer. * In “Corrections and Clarifications” (September 29, 2007), as a reader from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, points out, we failed to correct the spelling of British Columbia. It was given incorrectly as British Colombia in the original report, which we carried forth in this column! It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
