Poor people prefer low cost travel mode. But the Tamil Nadu Express Transport Corporation has removed some services and introduced high cost air buses. As a result, travel to Chennai from Kanyakumari costs Rs.100 more. The Government revised the fare structure in 2002. While private bus operators stick to it, the public sector deviates from the fare structure. Issuing an order enabling the public sector alone to hike bus fare is unfair. S. Ganesan, Eraniel, Kanyakumari district. Wearing of uniformsPoor students pursue engineering studies in Kanyakumari District with the help of bank loans. Many colleges have made it mandatory to wear uniforms on all days except on Saturdays. By allowing wearing of colour dresses on Saturdays, poor students are hit psychologically and mentally. So, students may be asked to wear uniforms on all working days. V.Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district. Sand miningThere is a surge in illegal sand mining and over exploitation of river sand. As per the Madras High Court order issued on July 15, 1999, river management committees or action panels should be set up to ensure that sand is mined as per the restrictions. Permanent marks should be fixed in the river bed and sand mining should be stopped wherever necessary. Incidentally, no such rules are being followed. As a result, both illegal sand mining and over mining are taking place in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts. Collectors of both districts have the responsibility of ensuring a free and fair sand mining. P.Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district. Extension of bus routeIn Tuticorin, many offices, banks, insurance and the Head Post Office are on Beach Road. ‘Our Lady of Snows’ Church is also there. All town buses entering Tuticorin from the south stop at Kamaraj College, take a turn to George Road and reach Fire Service Station through the adjoining road to reach V. E. Road en route to old bus stand. Instead, if these buses are allowed to ply through George Road up to Beach Road and then take a turn to V. E. Road near Head Post Office without any further change of the existing route to the old bus stand, many customers to banks and taluk office will be benefited. Additional buses may be arranged. Or alternatively, frequent bus services may be introduced. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. DTH serviceIt is reported that Sun TV has agreed to raise the offer of Rs.75 a month. This is illogical and detrimental to the interest of viewers. Cable TV operators have demanded that the price be hiked to Rs.200 a month. One fails to understand how this is acceptable. How can Cable TV operators prevent someone from providing the service at a cheaper rate. If they are not able to provide the service at such a reasonable rate they should seek alternative employment for their livelihood and not stand in the way of TV viewers getting cheaper service. A.N.S.Govindasamy, Kovilpatti.
