Row over medium in Municipal schools

Special Correspondent

Office-bearers of Telugu Bhasha Vikasa Udyamam oppose introduction of English

KURNOOL: A controversy is raging over the move to introduce English as the medium of instruction in Municipal schools in the city. Office-bearers of the Telugu Bhasha Vikasa Udyamam met Municipal Commissioner L. Vandana Kumar and lodged their protest on Monday. The SFI activists also stormed the Municipal Corporation office and registered their opposition. Of the 13 Municipal Schools, the authorities proposed to introduce English as the medium of instruction in 50 per cent schools this year onwards. It was not finalised whether English instruction should start from the fifth or sixth class.

Talks with corporators

Mr. Vandana Kumar held several rounds of talks with the corporators and headmasters of Municipal schools and obtained their consent for reforms. K. Chandrasekhara Kalkura and JSRK Sarma of the Telugu Vikasa Udyamam registered their protest saying Telugu was one of the languages on the verge of extinction. It would be suicidal for Telugu if the Government also patronised English.

Mr. Vandana Kumar argued with the Telugu language supporters saying it should not be the burden of the children of municipal schools alone to protect Telugu but the entire society. The status of the downtrodden would further decline if they were deprived of English education. He advised them to take up with the Government a uniform educational policy and asked them not to interfere with the Municipal Corporation affairs.
