A quiz to promote innovation among school students

CHENNAI: One of the country’s most famous science quizzes will soon come to Chennai. The Jack Kilby Science and Technology Quiz, organised by Texas Instruments India, will soon have the best of high school students competing for top-end electronic prizes.

Designed to promote analytic, out-of-the-box thinking among school students, the annual quiz is an eagerly awaited event by many schools in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi, the three cities which it will visit this year.

“TI India intends to reach out to school students to foster a spirit of innovation and enquiry. Ever since we started in 2003, the response from schools has been tremendous.

“Last year, 1,200 teams from the three cities participated. This year, we are looking to bring in more schools.” Sylvia Subbaiah, leader, TI India Foundation, told The Hindu.

The quiz is in honour of Nobel laureate Jack Kilby, a former TI employee and inventor of the integrated circuit in electronics applications.

The format of the quiz involves a preliminary round. Of the 16 who qualify, one regional winner is selected, who then goes on to the finals. Special prizes are also on offer for the best all-girls team. The finals will be held in Bangalore on November 11.

The regional rounds will take place in Chennai on October 26 and in Delhi on October 31.

“The quiz is mostly an analytical test and the entire show is run by volunteers. Online registrations are allowed. Each school can send six teams of two members each,” says Ms. Subbaiah.

From next year on, the quiz would look at schools outside metropolitan areas, in an effort to bring in more participation. For registrations, log on to www.tiif.org or e-mail tijkquiz-query@list.ti.com.
