Udupi: The Department of Forests will be organising a competition in sand sculpture to create a public awareness on sea turtles on the Malpe beach here on Tuesday. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Manjunath Shetty, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Moodabidri, said that 20 teams had registered their names to participate in the competition. It would begin at 10 a.m. and culminate at 5 p.m. Each team would be given a 15 feet X 15 feet space to create their sand sculpture. The sculpting has to be done with hands and traditional equipments. Mechanical devices were not allowed in the competition, he said. The themes for the competition are: “Kurmaavatara”, life-cycle of sea turtle and relationship between turtles and human beings. Already there were 1,000 entries for the drawing competition being organised by the department on same themes. The conference of village forest committees would be held in Udupi on October 6. Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya will inaugurate the conference. Another sand sculpting competition will be held on the Marvanthe beach , Mr. Shetty said.
