Udupi: A large number of people turned up for the national-level World Heart Day Walkathon organised by the Kasturba Hospital here on Sunday. Olympian Ashwini Nachappa led the walkathon. Vice chancellor Rajasekharan Warrier administered the oath to participants that they would maintain a healthy life style. Vasanthi Pai, wife of the chancellor of Manipal University Ramdas Pai, flagged off the walkathon that began from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College culminated at the OPD of the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Ashwini Nachappa lauded the efforts of the Kasturba Hospital in creating awareness among the people about a healthy life style. H.S. Ballal, pro-chancellor of Manipal University, said the programmes such as walkathon was essential to create awareness among the people, especially the women, about increasing incidence of heart diseases. Thematic competitions in dressing and vehicle decoration were held.
