Government defied orders: AIADMK

Special Correspondent

The party makes a mention of bandh in court

“Private bus owners were warned against running their fleets”

“DMK volunteers threatened shopkeepers and hotels”

CHENNAI: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam made a mention of the bandh before the Madras High Court on Monday, accusing the State Government of defying court orders.

On being informed that the AIADMK was mentioning the matter before the High Court as well as in the Supreme Court simultaneously, the First Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice P. Jyothimani said it would take up the matter at noon when the stand of the Supreme Court would be known.

N. Jothi, counsel for the petitioner, said State Transport Corporation buses were not being operated, and private bus owners were warned against running their fleets. In a memorandum to the court, the party said DMK volunteers threatened shopkeepers and hotels.

But Advocate-General R. Viduthalai said most of the shops and business establishments were open, and none interfered with the public transport system.

The Bench asked Mr. Viduthalai to get instructions from the Chief Secretary and inform the court about the situation at noon.

However, L.P. Shanmugasundaram, counsel for the petitioner, informed the court at noon that the Supreme Court had issued a warning to the State Government and the DMK, and asked the AIADMK to file a petition in court.

In view of this submission, the Bench permitted him to withdraw the memorandum.
