The 138th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Tuesday was a significant event as it was widely seen as a historic milestone in humanity’s quest for global non-violence. The United Nations has declared Gandhi Jayanti as the International Day of Non-Violence. To mark the birth anniversary of Bapu, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) in Delhi has launched a series of important initiatives across the country to spread the message of the Father of the Nation. The Samiti launched a special Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship for the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, Presidency College Kolkata, and universities of the North-East to celebrate the momentous occasion. The universities of Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, North-Eastern Hill University, Tripura, Jamia Millia Islamia and the Presidency College have already announced the names of the students for the fellowship. The GSDS has launched the Centre for Non-Violence in schools and educational institutions of the North-East. The aim is to involve students to promote a culture of peace and non-violence and community building. The Samiti has also launched a major child participation programme in the North-East. On Tuesday, a musical tribute was presented by students from 16 schools here. – Madhur Tankha
