An artist who draws on nature

Green and serene: A work by Anuradha Rishi

For 43-year-old Anuradha Rishi, her work is just an expression of nature’s rich bounty that she grew up in. Hailing from picturesque Jammu, Anuradha developed an early tendency to showcase mother nature in all its resplendent glory on her canvas. Her latest exhibition at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in New Delhi is the result of the same passion.

“Being born and brought up in the lap of nature in Jammu, I couldn’t escape the effect it had on me. Also I was fortunate enough to inherit my late father’s legacy and talent in the art of Pahari paintings. He has been my guru and had an indelible impact on my understanding of the art of painting. I have just followed his footsteps and completely taken after him,” says she.

Following her passion for painting since her early childhood days, Anuradha graduated in Fine Arts from the College of Art in Jammu and turned professional later and specialised in landscapes defining the beautiful surroundings of the Valley, figurative and semi-nude works with woman as the centre-stage.

“I relate nature with women as they both epitomise similar elements of crudeness, softness, fragrance and beauty.”

Comprising 30 oil paintings on canvas collected over the past four years, her exhibition is being held jointly with an exhibition of painting reproductions of artist Konstantin Vasilyev from Russia.

The joint exhibition is dedicated to the 65th birth anniversary of the Russian painter and the 105th birth anniversary of Anuradha’s father Sansar Chand Baru, master of the art of Pahari paintings.

The exhibition is open up to this Thursday.
