Veteran: Chittani Ramachandra Hegde who will play Arjuna in ‘Krishnarjuna Kalaga’. SHIMOGA: Encouraged by the response to the 24-hour Yakshagana fair held in Shimoga in 2004, the Abhyudaya has embarked upon this venture for the second time in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture. It has arranged “Yakshagana Kalaga Utsava” at the Kuvempu Rang Mandir here on Saturday where nine Yakshanagana episodes based on popular mythological stories will be performed in the “Tenku” and “Badagu” style by troupes from Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada. The fair will commence with “Sudhanwarjuna Kalaga” to be performed by Yaji Yaksha Mitra Mandali at 6 p.m. It will be followed by “Babruvahana Kalaga” by Makkala Mela Saligrama; “Taamradhwaja Kalaga” by H. Sridhar Hande Troupe of Kota; “Yakshottama Kalaga” by Yakshagana Kendra Udupi; “Chitrasena Kalaga” by Sri. Lakshmi Janardhan Yakshagana Kala Mandali of Udupi; “Luv-Kush” Kalaga by Poornachandra Yakshakala Pratisthan of Kondadakuli; “Mairavana Kalaga “ by a special troupe selected from Tenkutittu under Sunnambala K. Veeranjaneya Yaksha Mitra Mandali of Bangaramakki. The highlight of this episode is that three generations of a family will perform in it. While Chittani Ramachandra Hegde, a 77-year-old artiste will play Arjuna, his son Subramanya Chittani will appear in the role of Krishna and his grandson Keerthi Chittani will play Abhimanyu. President of the Abhyudaya Lakshminarayana Kashi and its convener Rathnakar said that the Yakshanagana Fair was being organised for viewers interested in this versatile art form and not with any intention of setting records. The programme will be also be displayed on a mega screen outside the auditorium. Entry for the fair is free.
