FACE-TO-FACE: Collector G. Sundaramurthi addressing the gram sabha meeting held in Ilanagar village in Namakkal district on Tuesday. NAMAKKAL: The village panchayats in the district should initiate efforts to achieve total sanitation, Collector G. Sundaramurthi has said. Participating at the Grama Sabha meeting held in connection with the Gandhi Jayanthi in Ilanagar in Elachiapalaym block of Namakkal district on Tuesday, he has said that village panchayats, which achieve total sanitation coverage, maintain clean environment and become open defecation-free will be selected for the Nirmal Gram Puraskar Award. A total of eight panchayats in the district received the award so far. The elected representatives in all the other panchayats should take steps to receive the award by improving the sanitary conditions, he stressed. The Panchayats could also get the Uthamar Gandhi award, which carried cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, from the State Government if they had undertaken outstanding works, special initiatives and innovative efforts. The Kadachanallur panchayat received the award in the district, the Collector said. Mr. Sundaramurthi asked the members to make use of the Grama Sabha meetings to discuss various problems faced by the panchayat and find out solutions. He also called upon the elected representatives to make all the villages child-labour free. Parents should send the children to schools. Employment of children aged below 14 years would affect their physical and mental health, he pointed out. Assistant Director (Panchayats) Mahalingam and senior officials were present in the meeting. Grama Sabha meetings were held in all the 331 village panchayats in the district. In Salem district, the Sabha meetings were held in all the 385 village panchayats. District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam participating in the meeting held at Kondappanaickanpatti panchayat near here, said that the Sabha members should discuss the works to be taken up for the village development periodically. The district administration recommended 50 villages for the Nirmal Purashkar Award, he added. Assistant Director (Panchayats) R. Palanivelu and senior officials were present.
