DEPRECABLE: Kamaraj statue surrounded by uncleared slush at Ambur on Tuesday.

AMBUR: Ambur continues to thrive under environment degradation as conservancy operations have totally failed owing to shortage of manpower. Congressmen at Ambur are up in arms as the Ambur Municipality failed to clear the garbage adjoining the statue of the late Chief Minister Kamaraj opposite to the Hindu Higher Secondary School here.

The situation existed on Tuesday when scores of Congressmen including former Member of Parliament were at Ambur to pay their homage to Kamaraj on his death anniversary. Some of the members of the Ambur Town Congress Committee including its president E.Suresh Babu and councillor K.Yuvaraj had informed the Ambur Municipality Commissioner to deploy adequate conservancy staff to clear the garbage.

Some of the Congress leaders, who had come to garland the statue of the leader, told The Hindu that they were shocked to see garbage strewn around the statue. Further, party workers found it very difficult to reach the statue due to slush. When the Municipality staff were approached, they said that direction had already been given to the private contractor who had taken up conservancy related works in 10 of the 36 wards in the town. “We are not to be blamed. It is a total lapse on the part of the private contractor,” the staff said.

Mr. Suresh Babu and Mr. Yuvaraj, who were at the statue site, said the municipality had failed to execute its responsibility. “We are totally unhappy with the Municipality and feel that we are wasting our time being councillors. We seriously think of resigning our post,” they added.

Some municipality staff said that they had sent in their own conservancy workers to clear the heap of garbage strewn near the Statue. But a visit to the site revealed that they had not cleaned the slush. “On behalf of the Ambur Town Congress Committee, I condemn the Municipality for its inaction,” said Mr. Suresh Babu.

The Municipal staff, on the other hand, said that there was a shortage of manpower. A total of 133 conservancy workers of the municipality now cleaned 20 of the 36 wards. “Most of the time we had to deploy these staff in other municipal works. We have to manage with whatever work force we have got,” they added.
