Police donate for a Gandhi statue

Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: It might be hard to picture policemen as ardent followers of Gandhigiri. But there are exceptions.

The personnel of Bekal police station have contributed generously to get a statue of the Father of the Nation installed on the station premises.

Sculptor Surendran Kookkanam also chipped in by making the statue free of cost in his spare time.

DSP unveils statue

District Superintendent of Police K. Natarajan unveiled the statue at a function on Tuesday.

Earlier, a person named Muthalakkoran had donated Mahatma’s statue to the station. But the statue had some structural defects.

Following that, policemen decided to contribute for a statue. Their search for a sculptor ended when Mr. Kookkanam who had earlier made the statue of Kunjali Marakkar at Vadakara agreed to make it free of cost.

It took around 18 months for Mr. Kookkanam to make the six-foot high statue in concrete.
