Free breakfast scheme for elders in rural areas proposed

PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Society for the Care of Aged (PONCARE) has forwarded a proposal to the Government to implement a free breakfast scheme for elders in rural areas, PONCARE secretary A Paneerselvam said on Monday.

Speaking to The Hindu after the World Elders Day celebrations organised by the society, Mr. Paneerselvam said it could be a separate scheme that would cover elders who did not have any income and no one to depend on. “If the Government clears the proposal, a survey would be conducted and we could open communewise centres to implement the scheme.” He said the Government had granted approval for the construction of a day care centre at Villianur and the PONCARE had submitted a proposal for constructing one at Bahour. The day care centres are places where senior citizens can spend their daytime playing indoor games and reading books and magazines. Earlier, speaking at the function, he said the society was presently conducting camps in rural areas and camps had been conducted at Soriankuppam where 157 elders participated and Karaiyamputhur where 273 persons benefited from the check up. Similar camps would be held at Kalapet and Mannadipet, he added.
