DAVANGERE: The ideals propounded by Mahatma Gandhi are relevant in all times and places, M.B. Dyaberi, Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district, has said. Participating in the Gandhi Jayanthi Day celebrations here on Tuesday, he recalled how Gandhiji had fought for the freedom of the country, and how he had secured its Independence through the use of non-violence. This had assumed further significance as there was an urgent need to spread the message of Ahimsa (non-violence) among the people of the country, especially owing to increased incidence of violence, he said. Mr. Dyaberi stressed the need to spread the philosophy of Gandhiji, and enable youngsters to follow his path. Gandhiji was a distinguished leader and had influenced the lives of many people. Hence, it was imperative that we internalised his teachings, he added. K. Mallappa, freedom fighter and former MLC, said it was unfortunate that Gandhiji was remembered for only two days in a year, and added that documentaries on Independence, Gandhiji and other leaders of country, which had been screened in cinemas, had unfortunately been stopped. Rev. Father Anil Kumar, Maganur Gopala Char and Ibrahim Sakafi spoke. Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat Nijalingappa, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Bettasurmutt, Assistant Commissioner Janaki and Commissioner of Davangere City Corporation Pranalinga Shivasali were present.
