Accommodation project for sailors

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Vice-Admiral Sunil K. Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, laid the foundation stone for the Married Accommodation Project (MAP) for sailors here on Monday.

This project is expected to be completed within 18 months at an approximate cost of Rs.68 crore. These houses will have an increased area and improved specifications when compared to the existing ones.

The Indian Navy is observing 2007 as the ‘Year of the Sailor.’ Various activities have been undertaken for the welfare of the sailors on the occasion. The accommodation project is one such, in which 352 quarters are being constructed at Rameswaram and Kochi.

The MAP was conceived in 2001, to make good deficient married accommodation in the armed forces as a one-time measure, at an approximate cost of Rs.18,000 crore. The plan is to build 2.5 lakh dwelling units covering 364 stations, in three phases. Kochi is one of the six naval stations included in phase-I of the project. Ninety-nine houses for junior officers are already under construction at Panampilly Nagar here.
