Tributes: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh on Tuesday. CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday launched a first-of-its-kind scheme in the country on Gandhi Jayanti day to provide transportation facility to pregnant mothers to delivery stations in Mewat district. They flagged off nine such mobile vans and also flagged off a mobile delivery-cum-operating van to function as a hospital-on-wheels from Ghasera village in Mewat. Mahatma Gandhi had visited this village on December 19, 1947, to motivate the Meos to not to migrate to Pakistan after Partition. Mr. Hooda also launched a scheme to provide financial assistance to gram panchayats for improved sanitation and employment generation for Scheduled Castes. Addressing the State-level function, Dr. Kidwai and Mr. Hooda assured integral development of Mewat area at an accelerated pace. Mr. Hooda also disclosed that the proposal to construct a Rs.380-crore Mewat Canal had been forwarded to the Central Water Commission for approval. Dr. Kidwai regretted that although Haryana was now a fast developing State and the adjoining areas of Mewat -- Gurgaon, Faridabad and Manesar -- were growing at a rapid pace, Mewat had not kept pace with this changing scenario. He urged the people to give the best possible education to their wards and avail of the facilities being provided by the State Government to change the face of this backward area. While appreciating that the Neem Khera Gram Panchayat of Mewat area had been honoured by Mr. Hooda as all its members and sarpanch were women, he emphasized that ample opportunities should be provided to the fairer sex. Mr. Hooda squarely blamed the previous governments for lack of development in Mewat. He asserted that his regime was committed to overall development of the region. A Rs.425-crore drinking water supply scheme named after late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had been implemented to benefit 503 villages. Also, 50 per cent seats have been reserved for the residents of Mewat in the polytechnics and ITIs of Mewat. He declared Ghasera as a model village and said Rs.6.9 crore would be spent to improve its streets. Other developmental schemes would also be implemented in the village. Mr. Hooda also gave away appointment letters to six safai karamcharis of blocks in Mewat to launch the scheme to appoint 11,000 safai karamcharis for maintaining sanitation in rural areas of the State. Each such safai karamchari would be paid Rs.3,525 per month. Haryana Congress president Phool Chand Mullana, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dharamvir, Lok Sabha MP Avtar Singh Badhana were among those present.
