Hundreds participate in agitation Traffic system at Karamana to be revamped Thiruvananthapuram: Potholes near Karamana junction along Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari stretch of the National Highway 47 passing through the capital claimed the life of a scooterist on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Radhakrishnan, 41, a resident of T.C. 22/4114, Thaliyil Veedu, Kalady South, Attukal, near here. According to the traffic police, the incident took place at 8.40 a.m. near the petrol pump at Karamana junction. The victim was returning home on the scooter after dropping his wife, Sajitha, a women police constable attached to Karamana police station. The accident occurred when Radhakrishnan was proceeding to Killipalam after filling petrol in the scooter, the police said. The victim was thrown off from the two-wheeler after it fell into the pothole and was subsequently run over by a KSRTC bus that was coming from Karamana and proceeding to East Fort. However, the police said over-speeding and rash and negligent driving of the driver of the KSRTC bus resulted in the death of the scooterist. The traffic police registered a case against the driver of the KSRTC bus. The bus driver is absconding, the police said. The body of Radhakrishnan had been kept at the mortuary of the Medical College Hospital after a post mortem. The funeral will be held later. Irate locals and traders staged a road blockade in Karamana for over two-and-a-half hours to protest against the lethargic attitude of the authorities concerned in carrying out repair works, compensation to the family of Radhakrishnan and revamping of the traffic system. Hundreds of people cutting across political affiliations participated in the agitation. The efforts of the police to pacify the agitators and to restore traffic along the NH 47 did not succeed as the locals demanded an assurance on their demands. Later, Additional Divisional Magistrate Surendran arrived and held discussions with the local people. The blockade was withdrawn following assurance that potholes will be filled before 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Mr. Surendran gave assurance that the traffic system at Karamana will be revamped.
