Pratima, Sheela win gold

BANGALORE: Pratima Hegde and Sheela Kumari combined to give Karnataka its first gold in the inaugural National Tenpin Bowling Team championship, which got underway at the Star City Bowling centre this morning.

Pratima and Sheela tandem scored 2165 points with Pratima setting the trend with a series of high scoring games.

Current National champion Sabeena Saleem and daughter Sanaa from Tamil Nadu finished second with 1910 points while Karnataka ‘B’ and Maharashtra jointly took the bronze with 1737 points.

Four teams — Karnataka, TN, AP and Maharashtra — are in the fray amongst women.

After the first batch in the men’s doubles section, the duo of national champion Vijay Punjabi and Dr. Ajay Singh were in the top position with 2292 points.

While Punjabi carded 1169 points Ajay Singh was not far behind at 1123.

The duo was followed by another Karnataka pair of Srinath Poobathi (1125) and Anthony Rajkumar (1143) with a total of 2268.

TN’s Rajmohan Palaniappan (1100), who recently had a perfect game of 300 in the 40th Singapore International Open Tenpin Bowling championship, along with Rahul Jain (1075) have tallied 2175 points.

Cricket tournament

The inter-school and pre-university college cricket tournaments for U-14, U-15 and U-17 boys of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts will be held at Nehru Maidan cricket grounds in Mangalore from Oct.15.
