BHUBANESWAR: Even as people across the globe observed International Day of Non Violence on occasion of birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on Tuesday, several organisations chose the day to stage demonstrations in the capital city to put across their grievances to administration. Rallies that passed through Master Canteen to Lower PMG Square were in different hues and were taken part by quite divergent groups of people. A group of over 50 women first appeared on the scene by gathering under banner of Nikhila Orissa Anganwadi Karmi Sangh (NOAKS). They demanded that the State Government should provide them minimum compensation for the work they had been putting in for years. They sat in a dharna till noon. Anganwadi workers were followed by hundreds of forest dwellers, who marched towards Lower PMG Square as part of a nationwide campaign in demand of early notification of Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. Silent marchTo add colour to demonstration galore on Gandhi Jayanti, members of All Orissa Roadside Vendors’ and Small Shop Association (AORVA) came out in a silent rally with their mouths tied in white strips. Similarly, students of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) used the occasion to reiterate their demands to completely withdraw year-back-system. Several students swept the Master Canteen Square, which was ravaged by them a few days ago, to highlight their issue.
