Make use of khadi rebate: Collector

Staff Reporter

Deepavali sale of products inaugurated in Karur; Rs. 1.17-crore target set

KARUR: Collector T.N. Venkatesh has urged the public to make the best use of the special rebate being extended for khadi material purchases and help village industries and handloom weavers.

Inaugurating a special rebate sale of khadi products for the Deepavali season on the occasion of the Gandhi Jayanthi here on Tuesday, Mr. Venkatesh said that a target of Rs. 1.17 crore has been fixed for sale of khaddar products during 2007-08. Last year, the district exceeded the sale target of Rs. 90 lakh by selling khaddar to the tune of Rs. 97 lakh.

The Collector pointed out that silk sarees being produced and sold through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission carried the “Silk Mark” for quality and attracted a special discount.

To meet the current year’s target, a total of 33 sales centres have been opened in the district, he added. Credit facilities have been arranged for various categories of workers in the private and public sector institutions.

Mr. Venkatesh observed that sandalwood garlands being prepared at the KVIC at its Vengamedu production unit was the fulcrum of all sandalwood garland sales throughout the State, accounting for roughly 60 per cent of the total sales.

People should come forward to buy khadi products and encourage rural weavers and handicrafts, he added. The Collector garlanded a photo of the Mahatma and paid floral tributes to him on the occasion of Gandhiji’s birth anniversary.

The first purchases were made by Government Higher Secondary School, Manmangalam, teachers N. Santhi and Rama Prabha. Karur RDO R. Seethalakshmi, Assistant Director, Khadi, A.R. Mani and Public Relations Officer L. Girirajan spoke.
