Rs. 2,000 crore to be spent during the next two years for rural areas Chief Minister holds review meet on availability of drinking water HYDERABAD: Plans have been drawn up to take up protected drinking water schemes for the left-out villages where groundwater is not safe, and ensure a 24-hour supply in towns/cities of the State. The plans aim at spending a large sum of Rs. 2,000 crore during the next two years for rural areas alone by converging funds available for water schemes under different programmes. Reviewing the availability of drinking water in rural/urban areas here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked officials to prepare protected water schemes for all uncovered villages, taking advantage of the improved groundwater table in the State following good rain, and the recently formed Rural Water Department. Dr. Reddy specified coverage of all habitations in the State with safe drinking water as his Government’s agenda. He noted with satisfaction that the steps taken in the last three years yielded fruit, with 12,621 out of 31,159 schemes taken up at a cost of Rs. 898 crore for an equal number of villages being completed. With this, 30,688 out of 72,208 villages in the State had come under protected water supply. Besides, 181 schemes had been taken up as part of a Rs. 362-crore project under drought mitigation programme. He said Indiramma, though primarily a housing scheme, too had assigned priority to water supply, setting aside Rs. 664 crore in 2006-07 to cover 13,405 villages. Out of them, 5,198 schemes had also been completed. This year, schemes had been taken up for 19,996 villages at a cost of Rs. 2,238 crore.
