Remembering the Mahatma: Governor N.D. Tiwari and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Bapu Ghat in Hyderabad on Tuesday. HYDERABAD: The State Government on Tuesday renamed the newly established Nalgonda University, catering to the needs of students from Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts, after Mahatma Gandhi. “Today, I met Governor N. D. Tiwari and he wanted the Government to commemorate the historic occasion of the Mahatma’s birth anniversary with something that will be cherished by everybody,” said Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy after participating in an oath-taking event on the International Day of Non-Violence here on Tuesday. Recalls meetingMr. Tiwari recalled his meeting with the Father of the Nation in 1945 in Allahabad as the president of the Allahabad University students union. “I had just been released from the prison when I, along with others, met the Mahatma in the early hours,” he said and pointed out that Gandhiji was impressed that he was wearing khadi clothes. Assembly Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, Legislative Council Chairman A. Chakrapani, Chief Secretary J. Harinarayan and DGP M.A. Basith and Ministers took the pledge administered by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from New Delhi. Floral tributesEarlier, Dr. Reddy accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues J. Ratnakar Rao, M.Mukesh, Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav and MLAs offered floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Assembly premises. Dr. Reddy also garlanded the statue of Mahatma at Gandhi Bhavan. In-charge president of the APCC G.S.Rao and PCC general secretary D. Nagender were present. The Governor and the Chief Minister also paid homage to the Father of the Nation at Bapu Ghat. The highlight here was rendering of a prayer song by Mr. Tiwari. Babu Rao Verma, president of the Bapu Smrithi, was the only freedom fighter who attended.
