NEW DELHI: To encourage use of solar energy, Delhi Transco Limited is exploring the possibility of roping in private companies to help in installation of solar water heaters in non-commercial institutions. DTL wants to collaborate with leasing agencies to allow non-commercial institutions to have their own solar water heaters without having to bear the cost. “It is a proposal at its very nascent stage. The idea is to encourage consumers to rely on solar heating, which in turn will result in twin saving of money and power,” said Principal Secretary (Power) Rakesh Mehta. Explaining the concept, he said: “For non-commercial institutions like colleges, hostels, working women hostels, which have large water requirements but no facilities for procuring a loan, we are exploring the possibility of a tie-up with a leasing agency that will allow them to install solar water heaters without having to pay the upfront money.” The leasing agencies being commercial enterprises will find it easier to get loans and can provide institutions willing to set up solar water heaters the money required for the same. “Once the system has been installed, the institutions can start paying the leasing company from the savings made by switching over to solar energy. The money can be collected in instalments. On receiving the final payment, the leasing company can either transfer the ownership rights of the solar water heaters to the institutions or lend it to other institutions,” Mr. Mehta said. DTL is currently holding discussions with the leasing companies to work out the modalities of the scheme. The Delhi Government has made the use of solar water heaters mandatory in all Government buildings, hospitals, hotels and jails and all residential buildings built on an area of 500 square metres or more.
