MYSORE: Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated in the city on Tuesday and the relevance of the Mahatma’s teachings of non-violence or ahimsa were underlined as being relevant to modern times torn asunder by strife and conflict. While educational institutions, notably schools, had special programmes to mark the occasion, an all-religion prayer meeting was held at the Town Hall in which sacred verses drawn from the scriptures of the Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Jains were read out. Prayer meetingAmong those who attended the prayer meeting were freedom fighter Seetharam Iyengar, former Minister Tanvir Sait, former Mayors P. Vishwanath and B.K. Prakash, D. Madegowda, MLC, Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowdaa and MUDA Commissioner P. Manivannan. Earlier, the statue of Gandhiji was garlanded by Seetharam Iyengar. And floral tributes were offered by T. Venkatachalaiah, M.R. Ramashesha, L. Ramaiah Shetty, K.M. Shivaswamy and others. TributesGandhi Jayanti was also celebrated at Gandhi Bhavan on Manasagangotri campus in which troupe from Sneha Balaga rendered poems of Kuvempu and songs on Gandhiji. Satyavratha, a well-known Gandhian and freedom fighter, paid floral tributes and garlanded a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. ParticipatedVice-Chancellor of University of Mysore J. Shashi Prasad, Gandhi Bhavan director Shivarajappa, and others were present.
