“Union and State extend all help to village industries”
VIRUDHUNAGAR: A call to patronise khadi products by all sections of people was given by the District Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, while addressing the Gandhi Jayanthi celebration organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Board here on Tuesday.
Mahatma Gandhi popularised khadi products among the masses as the only way to generate employment in villages and thereby improve rural economy.
In the present day context, the Union Government and the State were extending all help to khadi and village industries, the Collector said.
Current year target
Khadi goods worth Rs.75 lakh were sold in Virudhunagar district and the current year’s target had been fixed at Rs.1.09 crore.
The rural spinning centres functioning in Virudhunagar district provided employment for 110 women and khadi units employed 60 weavers.
The Government had advanced a sum of Rs.6.25 lakh as margin money to 341 rural artisans. Mr. Chandrasekar also gave an assurance that khadi products would be bought for government institutions, including hospitals.
