HYDERABAD: With a call “Weave your own code” inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s “Weave your own clothes” slogan, nearly 300 professionals, including students and teachers, gathered at Osmania University and decided to build an operating system for engineering colleges that comprises free software for all streams in engineering. The programme was organised by A.P. Chapter of Free Software Foundation (FSF) marking the Software Freedom Day that is celebrated commemorating the Gandhi Jayanti every year. Ram Chandram, Head, Department of Computer Science Engineering, Osmania University College of Engineering, and Vinay Babu, Director, School of Distance and Continuing Education, JNTU, who declared the software celebrations day open, said that it was only free software that could be used in freedom to provide solutions to people. They urged the academicians to contribute their intellectual ideas to make software for the people and embed the true spirit of democracy of - by the people, for the people and to the people in the field of computing. Science Day celebrationsKiran Chandra, convener of FSF AP Chapter, said the meeting decided to distribute the operating system to colleges by December-end and put it up for testing.
