“BJP will treat DMK as political opponent on ideology basis”

Staff Reporter

L. Ganesan

COIMBATORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party will henceforth treat the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam as a political opponent on the basis of ideology, State president of the party L. Ganesan told presspersons here on Tuesday in the context of the controversy surrounding the Ramar Sethu.

After a meeting to discuss preparations for the next Lok Sabha elections, he said so far the BJP had considered the Communist parties as opponents based on ideology and the Congress as an opponent on political lines.

But, now, the DMK had joined the category to which the Communists belonged.

No precedence

There had been no precedence in Tamil Nadu of houses of rival party functionaries and offices being attacked.

This made the BJP look at other parties, barring the Congress, Communists and the DMK, at “equidistance”, he said in response to a question whether there was any possibility of the BJP aligning with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The objections to the Sethusamudram project were only in terms of the route and site of dredging.

The issue did not have any communal overtone. But, only the utterances of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had lent a communal colour to it.

The BJP would fight to prevent the erosion of reservation for the Backward Classes, especially in the wake of the reported moves for providing quota for those who had undergone religious conversion. This would result in the denial of even 23 per cent reservation for the backward classes, he warned.

The BJP would go on a door-to-door collection of food, medicines and clothes for Sri Lankan Tamils from October 5. These would be sent to them through International Red Cross Society.
