Land being identified for dental college in Madurai

Minister meets Health Department officials, doctors

MAKING SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS: Health Minister K.K.S.S.R.Ramachandran at a review meeting in Madurai on Tuesday. .

MADURAI: The Madurai Collector has been asked to identify land for locating a government dental college in Madurai, Health Minister KKSSR. Ramachandran said on Tuesday.

A few sites had been identified, and a decision would be taken soon, he told reporters after holding a meeting with Health Department officials and doctors here.

He said officials were directed to expedite construction at primary health centres, government hospitals and the Government Rajaji Hospital/Madurai Medical College. More than Rs.2.5 crore would be spent on construction of buildings at the 100-bed government hospital at Usilampatti and another Rs.1.2 crore on a 24-bed hospital at Tirumangalam. For the 25-bed hospital at Melur, the government would construct a building at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. A Rs.1.2-crore building would be constructed for the Peraiyur hospital. Buildings were coming up at the Sholavandan hospital at a cost of Rs.60 lakh.

The Minister said the government had sanctioned Rs.2.6 crore for constructing new hostels at the Madurai Medical College. Government Rajaji Hospital officials had been asked to start work soon. Steps were being taken to appoint 150 doctors in various Siddha dispensaries in the State, and an announcement would be made soon.

Mr. Ramachandran reviewed the implementation of the ‘Varumun Kappom’ scheme, immunisation and plans for the expansion of the Rajaji Hospital here.

Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj; Collector S.S. Jawahar; MP P. Mohan; and Director of Public Health P. Padmanaban attended the meeting.
