Gram sabhas focus on job scheme

Special Correspondent

Villages told to aim at bagging Gram Nirmal Puraskar Award for total sanitation

VILLUPURAM: In a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the Villupuram and Cuddalore districts focussed attention on the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) at the gram sabha meetings held on Tuesday.

Villupuram District Collector Brajendra Navnit attended two gram sabha meetings held at Ramaiyanpalayam in Sahadevanpettai and Asarankuppam. At both the places, he called upon the people to enrol themselves under the job scheme.

He said all the villages should aim at bagging the Gram Nirmal Puraskar Award being given away by the President for total sanitation.

He said 15 panchayats in the district, including Jakkampettai, had been selected for the award.

All the rural households should set up individual toilets for which they would get a grant of Rs 1,400. Mr. Navnit said for footing the electricity bills on street lights and operating electric motors for pumping water, each panchayat had been allotted Rs 3 lakh.

He said the villages should judiciously utilise Rs 20 lakh sanctioned under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam to create facilities such as playgrounds, libraries, sheds in graveyards, roads etc.,

The Collector acknowledged the fact that Rs 38,000 granted under the Indira Awaz Yojana for construction of cluster houses was not sufficient.

Hence, the banks had come forward to give loan to the extent of Rs. 10,000 at the rate of four per cent interest.

The villagers put forth the demands that adequate bus shelters and school buildings should be built.

The Collector promised to fulfil their demands.

Oath administered

At Cuddalore, District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo administered an oath to mark the International Day of Non-Violence at Bilali. He ascertained the views of the people on the implementation of the NREGP by posing questions to the effect that how many of them had been given employment for what duration and whether the payment was made without any delay.

Mr. Ratnoo said with bank assistance individual toilets would be constructed in all the 250 households in the village in two months. Afterwards, it would be recommended for the Nirmal Puraskar Award.

The Collector promised to sanction adequate funds from his discretionary funds for construction of a park, a playground and carrying out repairs to the overhead tank. Assistant Director (Panchayat) Srinivasan, Block Development Officer Revathi, Public Relations Officer M.R. Lingam and others participated.
