CHENNAI: Every citizen should take a vow to make the country an economic super power, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, Union Minister of State for Textiles said here on Tuesday.

Participating in a Mupperum Vizha – Gandhi Jayanthi, 103rd birthday celebrations of Tiruppur Kumaran and Kamarajar death anniversary – Mr. Elangovan said reliability was India’s advantage over its trade rivals.

Similarly, democracy was healthy and thriving in India, he said comparing the country’s progress on this front to the situation prevailing in Pakistan and Myanmar.

To a plea on extending financial assistance to produce a film on Tiruppur Kumaran, a well known freedom fighter, Mr. Elangovan said there would be Kamaraj rule soon in the State and at that time the Government would extend all help to the project.

M.S. Rajendran, general secretary, Kamaraj Desiya Congress, the organiser of the programme, conferred “Desiya Thilagam” on Mr. Elangovan and said the organisation had appealed to the State Government to provide space for constructing an old age home for freedom fighters.

Mr. Elangovan also unveiled a portrait of Tiruppur Kumaran and A. Padmanabhan, former Governor, Mizoram, unveiled a portrait of Kamaraj.
