‘Harassment’ of passengers deplored

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: The Lakshadweep unit of the National Students Union of India has protested to the authorities against the ‘harassment’ of Lakshadweep ship passengers at the Kochi port in the name of security checks.

In a statement, its president, M. Ali Akbar, said the baggage and other personal effects of passengers were being thrown open in public without any concern for their privacy or sentiments.

Made to wait

They were also made to wait in the sun for long periods of time. Since many of the passengers were those visiting Kochi for medical treatment, the crude security check were causing them many difficulties.

Mr. Ali Akbar said the islanders were poor people who led a simple and peaceful life.

“Conspiracy”

He said he suspected that there was a conspiracy to tarnish the peace-loving image of Lakshadweep. He urged the Lakshadweep administration to ask the officials to end the ‘inhuman’ security checks and behave decently with the passengers.
