Staff Reporter

Endangered species: The carcass of a sea cow washsed ashore at Dhanushkodi on Tuesday.

RAMANATHAPURAM: A Dugong dugon (sea cow), a highly endangered species, was washed ashore at Dhanushkodi, 80 km from here, on Tuesday.

A part of the body, 12 feet length and weighing 500 kg, was in a decomposed condition.

The mouth and the stomach bore injuries.

A fisherman, who set out for fishing, spotted the animal in a remote area and informed officials of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park.

Rakesh Jegenia, Wildlife Warden of the Park, told The Hindu that an investigation was under way.

Forest Department officials were sent to conduct a post mortem.

The Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve is considered an important habitat for Dugong dugon.

The shallow waters, from Valinokkam to Pamban, which boasts of abundant sea grass, is a sea cow belt.
