COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Tuesday claimed to have killed a “very senior leader” of the LTTE in the north in an air raid. There was no immediate comment from the Tamil Tigers on the claim. The Defence Ministry said the Tiger hideout in Iranamadu was destroyed. “The target was taken after keeping it under air surveillance for a long time whilst the ground intelligence sources had continuously updated its recent activities. Defence intelligence sources said the hideout also was a frequent meeting place for the LTTE kingpins where they used to plan major terrorist attacks,” it said. The military said sporadic clashes on the Wanni front continued while search operations in the east uncovered more stocks of bombs and explosives. The military said that in Periyathampanai, troops fought a group of LTTE cadre who attempted to infiltrate the defence line killing one LTTE cadre. Two soldiers suffered “minor injuries”. Meanwhile, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed the shipment of 3,500 tons of food for Jaffna that will be distributed by the Government and the WFP to persons among the most vulnerable population. The first shipment that left Colombo to Jaffna on September 24 was part of a larger consignment of 5,300 tons that will be shipped during September with further monthly deliveries of 2,300 tons thereafter.
