Prajnesh upsets Vishnu Vardhan

Kamesh Srinivasan

NEW DELHI: Prajnesh Gunneswaran knocked out third-seeded J. Vishnu Vardhan with ease, even as Yuki Bhambri continued to assert his class, in the men’s pre-quarterfinals of the DSCL National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.

Prajnesh, the 17-year-old Chennai lad who trains with Rishi Sridhar, raced to a 6-4, 6-3 win over his rival.

In a contest that lasted an hour and 23 minutes, Prajnesh saved five breakpoints from 0-40 in the ninth game of the first set. He broke the strongly-built Vishnu in the next game despite the latter enjoying two game-points. In the second set, Prajnesh broke Vishnu in the fourth game and tightened his grip with a quality game. He wound up the show with an ace.

“I am happy with my game. I have been playing well, but errors at crucial stages have been stopping me from getting good results,” said Prajnesh, who had won a double in the ITF juniors event in Chennai last month.

Prajnesh will meet another left-hander and former National champion Vinod Sridhar in the quarterfinals.
