Says VS has succumbed to land mafia

High power panel to meet on October 8 to draw action plan

UDF to organise

taluk-level dharna

Thiruvananthapuram: United Democratic Front convener P.P. Thankachan on Tuesday said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would have to pay a heavy price for giving in to the land mafia to protect his job.

In a statement here, Mr. Thankachan said the UDF had decided to continue its agitation till Forest Minister Benoy Viswom resigned and the Government ordered either a judicial inquiry or a CBI probe.

Rally planned

He said UDF workers would stage a march and a dharna in front of the 53 taluks in the State as part of its agitation demanding the Forest Minister’s resignation.

He said KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala would inaugurate the march and the dharna in Thiruvananthapuram, while he would do the job in Aluva.

IUML general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty would inaugurate the agitation in Manjeri, Kerala Congress(M) leader K.M. Mani in Kottayam, Kerala Congress(B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai in Kottarakara and CMP leader M.V. Raghavan in Kannur.

Mr. Thankachan said the UDF high power committee would meet on October 8 to give final shape to the coalition’s agitation plan.

The meeting would be attended by the district UDF chairpersons and conveners.

Chandy’s convenience

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy would return home from his foreign tour by October 6 and the meeting had been scheduled for his convenience, Mr. Thankachan said.

The previous high power committee meeting had decided that each of its constituents would hold separate agitations seeking the Minister’s resignation.

The Kerala Congress (M) held its agitation on September 22.

The Indian Union Muslim League had also been staging agitations in its strongholds though at its own pace, while the CMP had been involved in its agitations and court cases related to the Pariyaram medical college issue.
