Rare Gandhi papers donated to India

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: A set of rare letters and handwritten manuscripts of Mahatma Gandhi were on Tuesday donated to the Indian Government by a prominent British Indian entrepreneur, Tom Tar Singh who acquired it at a public auction at Sotheby’s earlier this year, a spokesperson of the Indian High Commission said.

Manuscripts

The manuscripts, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, include drafts of a series of articles Gandhi wrote for Young India on a range of political and cultural subjects; and hand-written letters about the status of Urdu and Hindi. Mr. Singh, OBE, said : “My grandfather lived his life following Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, truth and justice. He believed in community based on fair play and self sustainability. These principles have been an inspiration to me and I believe there is scope to apply them more widely in modern India.”

The donation coincided with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which this year is being observed as U.N. International Day of Non-Violence.

Four months ago, British auctioneer Christie’s called of the auction of another set of rare Gandhi manuscripts after Indian Government’s intervention.
