Thiruvananthapuram: The police on Tuesday arrested eight persons in connection with the murder of Deepu Lal, a Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activist, at Muttathara on Sunday night.

Those arrested are also DYFI activists. They are ‘Flute’ Unni, ‘Krani’ Sathi, Ratheesh, Vipin, Unnikrishnan, Jayankutty, Kichu and Tilla Raj. Most of them worked for daily wages at construction sites. ‘Krani’ Sathi owned a tea shop.

The police said the suspects were friends of Deepu Lal who later turned bitter enemies. The main reason for their enmity was Deepu Lal’s drunken and often violent behaviour.

According to the police, the suspects resolved to harm Deepu Lal after he created a ruckus at the marriage function of Ratheesh’s sister on September 11.

Deepu Lal was killed on Sunday night while returning from the house of a Communist Party of India(Marxist) functionary whose mother had died earlier in the day. The suspects were also at the CPI(M) leader’s house at the time. The Fort police had registered four cases in the past year in connection with the often violent rivalry between the opposing groups at Muttathara.

A team led by City Police Commissioner Ravada Azad Chandrasekhar, Deputy Commissioner Abdul Wahab, Assistant Commissioner K.C. Sasikumar and Circle Inspector Gopakumar arrested the suspects from different locations in the district.
