Word of honour: Students taking a pledge during the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in the city on Tuesday. KOCHI: Cleanliness drives, awareness programmes and pledges to keep the city clean marked the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Kochi. K. Narayana Kurup, former judge of Kerala High Court, administered an oath to students at a function organised at Gandhi Square by the Kochi Corporation. Mayor Mercy Williams, Corporation councillors and officials of various Government departments took part in the programme. V.K. Mohanan, judge of Kerala High Court, inaugurated a cleanliness awareness drive at Ernakulam South Railway Station. C.M.C. Nair, Railway Area manager, presided. P.K. Aravindan, M.K. Sasidharan and K. Somasekharan, office-bearers of OISCA International; and G. Manu, Railway Chief Commercial Inspector, attended. Eye check-upsEye check-up camps will be organised at north railway station on October 3 at 9.30 a.m; Aluva railway station on October 4 at 9.30 a.m., and on October 5 at Ernakulam South Railway station at 9.30 a.m. as part of the programmes. A week-long cleanliness awareness programme was launched at Ernakulam North railway station. George John, senior commercial officer, inaugurated the campaign. Scouts and guides from Amrita Vidyalaya and National Service Scheme members of St. Albert’s Higher Secondary School also participated in the programmes. Leaflets were distributed to passengers. P. Chandran, station manager, welcomed the gathering and M.R. Reghunathan, chief commercial inspector, proposed a vote of thanks. The campaign will conclude on October 8. The staff and students of the Cochin University of Science and Technology took a pledge on Gandhi Jayanti day. Mass cleaning
Mass cleaning programmes were held on the campus and in college hostels. The T.D. Road Citizen’s Welfare Association inaugurated a weekly cleaning programme on Tuesday. The association plans to regularly carry out a cleaning operation in its area on every Sunday from 8 a.m.
